Eliel Athlete Spotlight:Lissa Muhammad

I am a mother of five, hailing from Southern California, with a passion for crit racing and gravel grinding. It's remarkable how just three years ago, I had no idea what gravel riding was. It was Kevin Evans from Major Motion Cycling in Los Angeles, CA, who introduced me to the concept and encouraged me to pursue racing in the gravel community.

Despite not having a dedicated gravel bike at the time, I embraced the challenge and with the help of my eldest son submitted my application video to Ride for Racial Justice in Denver, CO. An organization which aims to create a safe and welcoming environment for cyclists of all backgrounds and foster positive change within the sport of gravel. Little did I know that this leap of faith would immerse me in a vibrant community of cyclists and open doors to thrilling racing opportunities and travel experiences.

As I prepared for my first gravel endurance race in Steamboat Springs, CO, I was immediately captivated by the world of gravel. It became a sanctuary where I could conquer fears, find solace for my mind, explore new destinations, and embrace a slower pace amidst life's daily demands.

Gravel riding has become an integral part of my life for the past three years. I reserve some of my longest rides for gravel, cherishing the freedom it brings. But more than anything, it's the incredible people I've encountered through gravel who have enriched my journey. Their positive energy and ability to live in the moment are truly inspiring. Today, I am thrilled to be a part of the Shimano Gravel Alliance, helping to foster a sense of community within the gravel cycling world. Bringing together like-minded individuals who share their experiences, knowledge, and love for gravel riding.

Looking ahead, my heart yearns to embark on multi-day bike packing excursions, with the Great Divide ranking high on my bucket list. But until then, I find joy in embracing the beauty of life and the balance that gravel riding brings to my existence. It has transformed my perspective and enriched my experiences on two wheels.
